You’ve done your research and finally found the right counselor for you! Now you’re trying to figure out: what do I say? What should I expect? How do I get the most out of my time? Here are some helpful tips for your first counseling session:
- Be kind to yourself – Probably the most important one! You’ve already taken a huge step in reaching out for help and scheduling an appointment. It’s okay to feel nervous, scared or any emotions that may be coming up. Be kind and congratulate yourself for taking that brave step.
- Be open and honest with your counselor – We are here to help you and to provide a warm, safe and non‑judgmental space. The more honest and open you are, the more information we can have to help you on your journey. This also takes some time to build trust and safety, and we understand that.
- Set realistic expectations and trust the process – In most circumstances, these patterns and symptoms didn’t develop overnight and the solution that will provide lasting change won’t be a quick fix either. It is important to build a trusting relationship and learn all of the parts of your story to work together and create change.
- Ask questions – Ask us about our approach and how we view the therapy process! We want to make sure we’re the best fit for you.
- Be curious and reflect – A lot of the progress that happens in therapy is actually what we do outside of the room: being curious about our emotions, thoughts and experiences and reflecting on what is discussed in session.
Again, you are taking a huge step of bravery and vulnerability by asking for help. Hopefully these tips help you feel a bit more prepared to embark on this journey!
