My Therapy Philosophy

If you're looking for a place to explore the roots of what you're experiencing, deepen your self-awareness, nurture your relationships, and share some laughter along the way, you're in the right spot.

In therapy with me, we honor the reality of being human — how our minds and bodies are connected, how our nervous systems adapt, and how our past shapes our present. Whether it's your child, you, or your partner, I'm here to meet you exactly where you're at. Together, we'll get curious about your story and discover ways to help you feel more in tune with yourself — body, mind, and emotions — while moving toward the life you want to live.

I truly believe that everyone who walks into my office is doing the best they can with what they have. My role is to help you gain insight about yourself, offer compassion and perspective, and then collaborate with you on what changes feel meaningful to you. Your comfort and experience during our sessions matter deeply to me, so I'm flexible, adaptive, and always up for creating a space that works for your brain and body.

You can expect some light-heartedness mixed with purpose in our work — a blend of curiosity, maybe a well-timed swear word or a silly joke, and lots of genuine respect for the brave work you're doing here.

Neurodivergent-Affirming Care

I was diagnosed as neurodivergent later in life, as an AuDHD person (Autistic + ADHD), and this discovery transformed not only how I see myself, but how I practice as a therapist. I know firsthand how liberating and disorienting this journey can be, especially when you've spent years masking, feeling misunderstood, or wondering, "Is it just me?"

I specialize in supporting neurodivergent folks of all ages — from adolescents figuring out who they are, to adults who are exploring a late-in-life diagnosis or trying to understand what being neurodivergent means for them now. My mission is to create a truly neurodivergent-affirming space where you can unmask, connect with your authentic self, and learn to thrive in a world that wasn't always built with you in mind.

If any part of you is wondering whether you might be neurodivergent, or you already know you are, you're not alone. I'd be honored to walk alongside you as you get to know yourself in a deeper way, so you can live with more freedom, self-compassion, and connection.

Background & Training

I started off with a degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Arizona State, then dabbled in both non-profit and private practice settings. With almost ten years under my belt, I've worked with kids, families, individuals, and couples. Plus, I've got some advanced training in EMDR, IFS, and Emotionally Focused Therapy, which helps me dig deep into your concerns, not just scratch the surface. Also, I'm an approved Clinical Supervisor by AZBBHE, always open to new Supervised Private Practice opportunities or contract supervision for LAMFT's.

Melissa Lake

Licensed Associate Counselor

Hi, I'm Melissa! I believe that safety and connection are the foundation for healing.

My Approach

Instead of focusing only on quick fixes, I help clients get to the root of what's keeping them stuck so they can experience deeper, lasting change. We all carry wounds from the past that can impact how we see ourselves, relate to others, and navigate the world. My goal is to create a safe, welcoming space where you can explore these patterns and begin to heal.

I use a relational and attachment-based approach, which means I pay close attention to the connections in your life—including our therapeutic relationship—as a pathway to healing. I'm trained in several evidence-based therapies like EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), but I always tailor my approach to what feels right for you.

I believe in bringing warmth and even some humor into our work together because healing doesn't always have to be heavy. My style is down-to-earth and genuine, and I'm here to meet you wherever you are in your journey.

Areas of Focus

I specialize in working with trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. Whether you're dealing with the aftermath of difficult experiences, struggling with overwhelming emotions, or feeling disconnected from the people you care about, I'm here to help you find your way forward.

I'm also passionate about working with individuals who are highly sensitive, empathic, or who feel like they don't quite fit the mold. If you've ever been told you're "too much" or "too sensitive," I want you to know that these qualities can actually be your superpowers—we just need to learn how to harness them in a way that serves you.

Background & Training

I earned my Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Concordia University. I have specialized training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), IFS Level 1, EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), and I'm certified in trauma and resiliency through the Arizona Trauma Institute. I'm also trained in somatic approaches that help you reconnect with your body and nervous system as part of the healing process.

When I'm Not in Session

When I'm not in the office, you can find me spending time in nature, practicing yoga, or curled up with a good book. I'm a lifelong learner who loves exploring new ideas and approaches to healing, and I'm always reading something that might help me be a better therapist.

I also love spending time with my family and friends, trying new recipes (with varying degrees of success!), and taking long walks with my dog. I'm a firm believer that rest and play are just as important as work, and I try to practice what I preach when it comes to balance and self-care.
